Switch from Trello

Trello keeps work on boards of cards. Thendoo keeps it in Lists and puts it on a timeline. The importer bridges the two, so a board you’ve used for months doesn’t have to be rebuilt by hand.

Open the board in Trello and choose the board menu ⋯ → Print, export and share → Export as JSON. Trello explains it in Exporting data from Trello. Save the file. Do this once for each board you want to move.

  1. In Thendoo, open Settings → Import and pick Trello.
  2. Upload the .json file. It is stored encrypted and deleted when the import is done.
  3. Check the preview: counts and a few example cards. Nothing is added yet.
  4. Under Where should it go?, pick the Space for the board, or make a new one. A client board and a home board can land in different Spaces.
  5. Under Statuses, mark which Trello lists mean done. Thendoo guesses, and you can change each one.
  6. Choose Import.
  • The board becomes one List, named after the board, in the Space you chose.
  • Each Trello list (To do, Doing, Done and so on) becomes a status of that List, so the board keeps its columns.
  • Cards become tasks, with their descriptions, due and start dates, and a link back to the card.
  • Labels become tags.
  • Checklists on a card become the task’s checklist.
  • Archived cards and cards marked complete come over as completed. You choose whether to bring completed items at all.

Some things don’t come over, and the report says so: comments, members, and open cards in archived lists. Attachments are not copied. Each one is kept as a link in the task’s notes.

Each card keeps its Trello id. If you import the same board again, Thendoo updates the cards it already has and adds only new ones. Open cards with old due dates wait under Carried over, or you can clear those dates during the import. If the result isn’t what you wanted, choose Undo in Import history within 30 days.
