Savings goal plan with a weekly money check-in

Set a savings target, open a separate account for it and keep going with a five-minute weekly check-in habit instead of willpower alone.

What’s inside

Savings goal· 6 items

  1. Name the goal and the amount

    On the goal start day

    • What the money is for, in one sentence
    • Target amount and currency
    • Target date, or no date if it is open-ended
  2. Work out the monthly amount

    On the goal start day

    • Target divided by the months you have
    • Amount checked against last month's left over

If the number feels too big, lower it now. A smaller amount you keep saving beats a bigger one you stop.

  3. Set up the savings account in Thendoo

1 days after the goal start day

    • Account added with its opening balance
    • Transfers category used for moves into it
  4. Move the first amount

2 days after the goal start day

  5. One-month look back

30 days after the goal start day

    • Balance compared with the plan
    • Monthly amount adjusted if needed
  6. Three-month look back

90 days after the goal start day

    • Balance compared with the plan
    • Target date still realistic

Habits

  • Check the savings balance

    When
    After Sunday breakfast
    Then
Open Money and look at one number, the goal account balance.

    On Sun

  • Move one skipped purchase into savings

    When
When I decide not to buy something
    Then
Write down what you skipped and how much it cost.

    Whenever it fits

Why a habit and not a reminder

Savings goals rarely stop because of one big decision. They fade when nobody looks at them for a month. The weekly check-in habit keeps the goal in view for about five minutes, tied to a moment you already have. Its tiny first step is to look at a single number, which is small enough to do even on a bad week.

The second habit is optional and flexible. It turns “I didn’t buy that” into something you can see, which makes the choice feel like progress rather than a loss.

Why a separate account

Thendoo works out each balance from the opening balance plus its transactions. Giving the goal its own account means the progress is one clear figure in Net worth, not a mental sum. Mark the moves into it with the Transfers category so they aren’t counted as spending.

How to adapt it

  • Irregular income? Save a percentage of each payment instead of a fixed monthly amount.
  • Several goals? Apply the template once per goal and give each its own account.
  • Prefer a fixed day? Change the check-in schedule to the weekday you get paid.

An honest tip

Streaks allow one missed week by default, so a busy week doesn’t reset anything. This is a planning aid, not financial advice; talk to a qualified adviser about where to keep the money.
