Todoist and Thendoo integration

Bring your Todoist projects into Thendoo from a project CSV or a Pro backup. See how labels, priorities and repeat rules come over, and what stays behind.

How often: One-time import you can run again to pick up changes. No live sync with Todoist.

What syncs

  • Import: projects as Lists, with tasks and subtasksInto Thendoo
  • Import: labels as tags, priorities, descriptions and deadlinesInto Thendoo
  • Import: repeat rules that match Thendoo's repeat format exactlyInto Thendoo

Set it up

  1. 1In Todoist on the web, open a project and choose ⋯, then Manage data, then Export as CSV. With Todoist Pro you can take every project at once: Settings, then Backups, then Download.
  2. 2In Thendoo, open Settings, then Import, and pick Todoist from the grid. Choose your .csv or the backup .zip and select Upload and preview.
  3. 3Check the preview, then select Next: where it goes. Pick the Space your projects land in, choose what happens to open tasks with past dates, and select Import.

Good to know

  • This is a copy, not a sync. Tasks you finish in Thendoo are not ticked in Todoist, and later changes in Todoist come over only when you run the import again.
  • Todoist's exports leave out completed tasks, so only open tasks come over.
  • The export has no task IDs. Thendoo recognises a task by its project, its parents and its title, so a task you rename in Todoist arrives as a new task on the next run.
  • Comments come over as text in the task's notes. Sections and assignees come over as fields, not as structure or People.

Thendoo can import your Todoist tasks today. You upload Todoist’s own export file, check a preview, and choose where everything goes. There is no live sync: after the import, Thendoo owns the copy.

What comes over

Each Todoist project becomes a List. Tasks keep their subtasks, and @labels become tags. Priorities p1 to p3 map to Thendoo’s priorities. Descriptions and comments land in the task’s notes, durations become estimates, and deadlines come along. Sections and assignees are kept as fields on the List, so nothing is lost even where Thendoo has no exact match.

You can upload one project’s CSV, or the backup .zip from a Pro account, which holds one CSV per project.

Repeat rules

Repeat rules are the tricky part of any move. Thendoo reads Todoist’s repeat phrases and turns the ones it understands exactly into its own repeat rules: every day, every weekday, every other week, every N weeks, every Monday and Wednesday, every 15th, the last day of the month and similar. Because the export holds the phrase but not the start date, the first occurrence is worked out from today.

A phrase that can’t be matched exactly is never guessed. Todoist’s wording goes into the task’s notes, and the import report lists the task so you can set the repeat in Thendoo.

Safe to try

Nothing is written until you select Import. The preview shows counts and a few sample tasks first. Open tasks with past dates can keep their dates, where they wait calmly under “Carried over”, or you can clear those dates. Running the import again updates what came over before instead of making copies, and Undo this import removes the whole batch for 30 days. Your file is stored encrypted and deleted once the import is done.

Moving or keeping both

If you share projects with other people in Todoist, you can keep those there and import only your own. A live two-way Todoist connection, where Todoist would keep owning the task, is planned for later and is not built.

Troubleshooting

Some of my repeating tasks don't repeat in Thendoo.
Thendoo keeps a repeat rule only when it translates exactly. Phrases like "every day", "every weekday", "every other week" or "every 15th" come over; anything else keeps Todoist's wording in the task's notes, and the import report lists those tasks so you can set the repeat yourself.
I imported the same project twice. Do I have doubles now?
No. A second run finds the tasks it brought in before and updates them. The preview says how many items came over before, so you can check before you select Import.
I chose the wrong Space. Can I start again?
Yes. Open Settings, then Import, find the run in Import history and select Undo. Everything that import added is removed, and things you made since stay. Undo works for 30 days.
