Import tasks from CSV and Excel files

Bring tasks into Thendoo from any CSV or Excel workbook. Match the columns, preview the rows and undo for 30 days. Bank statements have their own import in Money.

How often: Manual, whenever you import a file. You can run the same file again.

What syncs

  • Tasks from any CSV, with a column-matching stepInto Thendoo
  • Tasks from one sheet of an Excel workbook (.xlsx or .xlsm), including a Google Sheets downloadInto Thendoo
  • Unmatched columns as fields on the ListInto Thendoo
  • Bank and card transactions from CSV or Excel, in MoneyInto Thendoo

Set it up

  1. 1Make sure your sheet has one row per task and a header row on top. From Google Sheets, choose File, then Download, then Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) or Comma-separated values (.csv).
  2. 2In Thendoo, open Settings, then Import, and pick Excel / Google Sheets or CSV file. Upload the file with Upload and preview. If a workbook has several sheets, pick the one with your tasks.
  3. 3Under Match the columns, tell Thendoo which column holds the title, notes, List, status, done, due date, start date, priority and tags. Only the title is needed. Select Update the preview to check.
  4. 4Select Next: where it goes, choose a Space and what happens to open tasks with past dates, then select Import.
Import bank transactions from CSV or Excel files

Good to know

  • The general importer brings in tasks. Events come in through the iCalendar (.ics) import, and bank transactions through Money. Contacts and links from a spreadsheet are not supported yet.
  • Rows have no IDs, so Thendoo recognises a row by its List and title. A row you rename in the sheet arrives as a new task the next time you import it.
  • One sheet of a workbook comes in per import. Older or other spreadsheet files (.xls, .xlsb, .ods, .numbers) and password-protected workbooks need saving as .xlsx or CSV first.
  • Up to 50 MB per file and 20,000 tasks per import.

Thendoo can import tasks from any CSV file or Excel workbook today. Plenty of apps can export a spreadsheet even when there is no importer made just for them, so this is the way in for everything else.

How it works

  1. Upload the file in Settings, then Import. Pick Excel / Google Sheets for a workbook or CSV file for a CSV.
  2. Pick a sheet if your workbook has more than one. One sheet comes in per import, and you can import another sheet afterwards.
  3. Match the columns. Thendoo suggests which column is the title, notes, List, status, done, due date, start date, priority and tags from the header names, and you can change each one. Only the title is needed.
  4. Preview. See counts and sample rows. Nothing is written yet.
  5. Choose where it goes, then select Import. It runs in the background with progress, and the summary lists anything that didn’t come over exactly.

Columns you don’t match become fields on the List, or you can leave them out. Rows without a List column go to a List named after the file, or after the sheet when a workbook has several.

Dates and numbers in Excel

Excel dates come over as real dates: a day stays a day, and a date with a time keeps its time in your time zone. Numbers come over as exact decimal text, the way Excel shows them, so an amount like 19.99 never turns into 19.989999. Formulas are read as the values Excel last saved, and hidden sheets, charts and macros are ignored.

Safe to run again

Running the same file again updates the tasks it brought in before instead of adding copies. You can undo a whole import for 30 days from Import history. Open tasks with past dates can keep them and wait calmly under “Carried over”, or you can clear those dates. Your file is stored encrypted and deleted once the import is done.

Bank statements

Money has its own import for bank and card statements, from CSV or Excel. It finds the header row and columns, skips lines it has seen before, merges lines with entries you added by hand and lets you undo an import. See the bank statement import page for its steps.

Troubleshooting

Some dates came in wrong, or were kept as text.
Dates like 03/04/2026 can be read two ways. Under Match the columns, set Dates like 03/04/2026 mean to day first or month first, then select Update the preview. A date Thendoo can't read is kept in the task's notes and listed in the report.
My amounts or numbers look different from the sheet.
They shouldn't. Numbers come over as exact decimal text, the way Excel shows them, never rounded through floating point. If a value still looks off, check whether the cell holds a formula; Thendoo reads the value Excel last saved.
Thendoo says this kind of spreadsheet can't be read.
The file is an older or different spreadsheet format, such as .xls, .ods or .numbers, or the workbook has a password. Open it, save it as an Excel workbook (.xlsx) without a password, or as CSV, and upload that.
My file is a bank statement, not a task list.
Bank and card statements go through Money, then the Import tab, which reads CSV and Excel statements and has its own steps. Task lists go through Settings, then Import.
