The short answer
Notion starts from pages and databases, so it suits wikis, notes and custom systems you shape yourself. ClickUp starts from tasks, lists and views, with time tracking and automations built in. Both have free plans, both charge per member, and ClickUp can import a Notion export.

Our take
Choose Notion if…
- You mostly write, document and link ideas, and tasks are one part of that.
- You like building your own system from pages and databases.
- You want a calendar app from the same company at no extra cost.
Choose ClickUp if…
- Your work is mostly tasks with statuses, owners and deadlines.
- You want time tracking and rule-based automations without extra tools.
- You need many views of the same tasks, like lists, boards and Gantt charts.
Notion and ClickUp often end up on the same shortlist because both promise “one place for work”. They get there from opposite directions.
Two starting points
Notion begins with a blank page. Pages hold text, tables, databases and embeds, and databases can be viewed as tables, boards or calendars. You decide what a “task” is and what fields it has. That freedom is the main reason people choose Notion, and the main reason some people leave it: a system you build is a system you have to maintain.
ClickUp begins with the task. Work lives in Spaces, Folders and Lists, and every task already has a status, dates, assignees and custom fields. Docs exist too, but they sit next to the tasks rather than the other way around.
What the free plans really give you
Notion’s free plan allows file uploads up to 5 MB each and 10 guests. ClickUp’s Free Forever plan caps total storage at 60 MB and gives trial access to time tracking, Gantt charts and dashboards. If you attach a lot of files, either free plan will feel tight quickly.
Automations, time and AI
ClickUp includes rule-based automations on every plan, from 5 active rules on Free Forever to 500 on Unlimited, plus native time tracking from Unlimited up. Notion’s Plus plan limits automations to buttons. Both companies sell AI separately or as a trial, so check what the plan you are buying actually includes.
Leaving either one
Your exit matters as much as your entry. Notion exports pages as PDF, HTML or Markdown, and databases as CSV. ClickUp exports task data as CSV and Docs as PDF, HTML or Markdown. ClickUp’s help center says its free and Unlimited plans can export List and Table views five times, with unlimited view exports on Business and up. ClickUp also has a dedicated Notion importer.
A quick test
Make a list of the five things you did at work yesterday. If most of them were “write or find information”, start with Notion. If most were “move a task forward and report on it”, start with ClickUp.
Where Thendoo fits
Thendoo is not a team wiki or a team project tool. It is a single-person web app that turns your tasks, calendar and Habits into one calm Today view. It has its own Docs with sub-pages and backlinks, and it syncs tasks assigned to you from ClickUp. ClickUp keeps owning the title and notes, while Thendoo helps you decide when to work on them. There is no sharing or collaboration, no AI beyond optional meeting notes, and no phone app yet. It can import a Notion export (pages as Docs, databases as Lists). If you work alone and want your day in one place, see Thendoo vs Notion and Thendoo vs ClickUp.
Moving from Notion to ClickUp
- 1In Notion, a workspace admin exports the workspace content from Settings. The download link arrives by email and can take hours for a big workspace.
- 2In ClickUp, start the Notion import from the workspace import tools and follow ClickUp's Notion import guide.
- 3Expect all Notion databases to land in one ClickUp Folder, with Notion properties turned into Text custom fields. Change field types you rely on, such as dates and dropdowns.
- 4Spot-check a few pages, relations and attachments before you change anything in Notion. Keep the export file as a backup.
Questions
Is Notion or ClickUp cheaper?
Both have free plans. ClickUp Unlimited is $7 per user per month billed yearly. Notion Plus shows $10 per member per month on its pricing page, with up to 20% off yearly. Check both pages before you pay, because prices change.
Can I use Notion as a task manager?
Yes. Many people track tasks in Notion databases. You build the statuses, views and filters yourself, which is flexible but takes setup time. ClickUp gives you those pieces ready-made.
Can I move from ClickUp to Notion instead?
ClickUp can export task data as CSV and Docs as Markdown or HTML. We have not checked Notion's import options for ClickUp data on its official site, so read Notion's help center before you start.
