Our take

Choose Motion if…

  • You would rather hand off the "when" and let software rearrange your day as things change.
  • You run projects with other people and want capacity planning and Gantt charts in the same tool.
  • You already capture tasks by email and want them scheduled from there.

Choose Sunsama if…

  • You want to choose your day yourself, with a short ritual that keeps the plan realistic.
  • Your tasks already live in Asana, Todoist, Notion or ClickUp and you want to pull them into one daily plan.
  • You want apps on Linux as well as Mac and Windows.

Motion and Sunsama both answer the same question: “My task list is longer than my day. What do I actually do today?” Their answers are almost opposite.

Who decides the plan

Motion decides. Its AI calendar looks at your tasks, deadlines and meetings and places work into your open time. When a meeting moves or a task runs long, it plans again. The appeal is that you stop spending energy on scheduling at all.

Sunsama asks you to decide. Each morning it walks you through your tasks and calendar and helps you pick a realistic amount, then you timebox the chosen tasks onto your calendar. At the end of the day, a shutdown step helps you close out and note what got done. The appeal is that the plan is yours, and choosing it is part of how you commit to it.

Neither is better in general. Some people find automatic plans freeing. Others ignore any plan they did not make themselves.

Where your tasks come from

Sunsama is built to sit on top of other tools. Its pricing page lists integrations with Asana, Todoist, Notion, ClickUp, Gmail and Slack, so you can keep your task system and use Sunsama only to plan the day. Motion is closer to a full workspace, with projects, docs and tasks inside it, plus email forwarding and Zapier for bringing work in.

Calendars and devices

Both connect to Google, Outlook and iCloud calendars, according to their own pages. Both have phone apps for iOS and Android. Sunsama also lists apps for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Cost and trial

Neither lists a free plan on its pricing page. Sunsama offers a 14-day trial without a card, then $22 a month or $17 a month billed yearly. Motion’s pricing page shows $19 per seat per month for Pro AI and $29 for Business AI, with a yearly discount and a monthly allowance of AI credits.

Try them fairly

Use the same five real tasks in both trials, on two ordinary workdays each. At the end of each day, note one thing: did you trust the plan enough to follow it? That answer matters more than any feature list.

Where Thendoo fits

Thendoo leans toward Sunsama’s style: you choose. Plan my day takes about ten minutes. At Pick your top 3 you choose up to three tasks, and Thendoo places them into your next free slots on the timeline. Close the day carries the rest forward with no guilt. It does not use AI to schedule for you, it has no phone app yet, and it connects to Google Calendar and ClickUp only. If a calm, hands-on daily plan with habits and money in the same place sounds right, see Thendoo vs Motion and Thendoo vs Sunsama.

Questions

Does Sunsama schedule tasks automatically like Motion?

Sunsama's main approach is planning by hand, where you pick and timebox each day's tasks. Its home page also mentions auto-scheduling, but Motion is built around it. Try both trials with the same week of tasks to see which feels right.

Which is cheaper?

Sunsama Pro is $17 a month billed yearly or $22 monthly. Motion's pricing page shows Pro AI at $19 per seat per month, with a discount for yearly billing. Prices change, so check both pages before you pay.

Can I move from one to the other?

We could not find an official importer between Motion and Sunsama. If your tasks live in a tool both connect to, or you rebuild your lists by hand, switching takes an afternoon rather than a weekend.
