Our take
Choose Evernote if…
- You want one place to keep notes, web clips, scans and recordings, searchable for years.
- You need your notes on your phone, desktop and the web, with offline access.
- You want AI help to search, summarise or tidy your notes.
Choose Thendoo if…
- Your notes are mostly about what to do, and you want those tasks planned into your day.
- You want habits, routines and bills on the same screen as your tasks and meetings.
- You want your notes linked to the tasks and meetings they belong to.
Remembering versus doing
Evernote’s promise is to help you remember everything. You clip a web page, scan a receipt, record a meeting or type a quick note, and Evernote keeps it safe and findable. Over the years it has added tasks, its own calendar, templates and AI features, and it runs on phones, desktops and the web. The free plan is small (50 notes, one notebook, one device), and paid plans lift those limits.
Thendoo’s promise is different: help you do the right thing at the right time. Its home is Today, a timeline with your Google Calendar meetings, the tasks you’ve planned, your When/Then habits and bills due soon. Thendoo has notes too. Its Docs support slash commands, @ mentions of tasks and people, sub-pages, a daily note and [[wikilinks]] with backlinks. They are built for the notes you use while you plan, not for a lifetime archive.
Where they differ
Capture and search. Evernote is far ahead here: web clipping, scanning, transcription, tags and advanced search across everything. Thendoo’s search covers titles only.
Planning. Evernote’s tasks have dates and reminders, and its calendar links events to notes. Thendoo is built around planning: a To schedule tray, drag-and-drop onto free time, Plan my day in the morning and Close the day in the evening. Missed tasks are Carried over, never shown as overdue.
Life admin. Thendoo adds habits, timed routines, a focus timer and a simple money module. We didn’t find these in Evernote’s plan table.
Devices. Evernote has apps everywhere. Thendoo runs in the browser and can be added to a phone’s home screen; native apps are planned.
Moving in, later
An Evernote importer is planned for Thendoo’s second wave of importers. It is meant to read the .enex files Evernote exports and bring notebooks and notes over as Docs, keeping tags and attachments, with a preview first and an undo afterwards. Until then, keep your archive where it is and move only what you’re working on.
Choosing
If you need a place to keep and find everything, Evernote does that well. If you want your notes to turn into a plan for today, try Thendoo for a week next to Evernote, and see which one helps you finish things.
Moving from Evernote to Thendoo
- 1Decide what moves. Many people keep their archive in Evernote and move only active projects and to-dos.
- 2Re-add open tasks in Thendoo with the Capture palette (Ctrl+K / ⌘K), with a date and #Space in the same line.
- 3Paste the notes you need day to day into Thendoo Docs and link them to their tasks with @ mentions.
- 4An Evernote importer is planned for the second wave of importers. It is meant to read Evernote's .enex export and bring notebooks and notes over as Docs, with tags and attachments. It is not available today.
Questions
Can Thendoo import my Evernote notebooks?
Not today. An importer for Evernote's .enex export files is planned for a later wave. Thendoo can import an Obsidian vault today, if some of your notes live there.
Is Thendoo a good place to keep a large note archive?
Not really. Thendoo's Docs are for notes you use while planning, and search covers titles only. For a big, searchable archive, Evernote is the better tool.
Can I use Evernote and Thendoo together?
Yes. Keep reference notes in Evernote, and plan the tasks that come out of them in Thendoo. Put a link to the note in the task so it's one click away.
